Dibetic diets and diabetic cooking sounds difficult, but it doesn't have to be. The idea is to use slow carbs to control your blood glucose levels and there are many ways of doing just that. Here are a few links of interest for diabeties meal planning and diets:

You can find many good ideas on diabetic cooking, dibetic diets and meal planning from any good diebetic cooking magazine with dibetic GI receipts, but there are many equally good links on the Internet as well. You can even try out your own variants of diabeties recipes following our GI recipe guidelines. Always control with your doctor or dietist that you have got your meal plan right before launching it. You need to remember that a proper diabetes diet is something you will need to have for the rest of your life and it is important to be strict when following the meal plan.

The vegetarian  GI diebetic diet (diabetes diet) 

The vegetarian diebetic diet offers a lot of possibilities and still within the requirements of good diabetes meal planning. With the vegetarian diet, you can choose from ingredients such as beans and lentils, potatoes, bread (wholemeal!) and many others. You need to abandon the old idea of counting calories - as a diabetic, it now becomes more important to count carbohydrates. You need to make sure you get enough of the carbs in your food, it needs to be around 50% in an ideal diabetic vegetarian diet.

Results of diabetics using a vegetarian meal plan have been very encouraging, there have even been some results showing less need for injections of insulin when on a diabeties diet for type 2.

Starting with a good vegetarian cookbook is a good idea. When you start to count carbohydrates, it will be easier with proper meal planning and diabetic diets with GI recipes.

Using diabeties meal plans

The amount you should eat is nothing obvious, it will need consideration from case to case. Your personal doctor, diabetes dietitian, or advisor must consider and advice you on that. There are sample meal plans available on many websites, including information from the American Diabetes Association.

For the use of diabetic meal plans like these, you first need to establish what calorie level you need to aim for. The American Medical Association recommendations are that well designed diabetic diets combined with a good amount of physical activity as well as prudent use of your prescribed insulin and other medication functions as a very important foundation of diebetes selfmanagement. Most of the mealplans you find will be based on food exchange units so you will need to compare this with an exchange list, usually found in most diabeties cookbooks, in order to establish the specific amounts allowed for chosen food.
